By Conrad Prabhu — MUSCAT — Dubai-based construction firm Al Jaber Engineering and Contracting (ALEC) says it has been awarded a contract to build a new luxury property in Jabal Al Akhdhar at a cost of around $53 million. The Jabal Akhdar Anantara Hotel Resort Spa will be the second 5-star hotel to be developed in this up-and-coming resort destination whose breathtaking landscapes, enchanting terraced gardens, and balmy Mediterranean-style climate underpin the mountain region’s huge tourist appeal. Owned by a major Omani government pension fund, the 115 keys resort will also feature a spa, Teen Fitness club, Kids Club, garden villas, cliff edge villas, a presidential villa, utilities rooms, and other amenities. Oman-based Services Trade Co LLC (ST) is ALEC’s joint venture partner in the execution of the Jabal Akhdar hotel project. Engineering Innovation Design Consulting (EIDC) are the design consultants while Driver Consult Oman LLC are the quantity surveyors.
For ALEC, the contract represents an important foray into Oman’s lucrative construction sector. A subsidiary of the well-known Al Jaber Group, ALEC has been associated with construction projects that have become major landmarks in the UAE and the wider Gulf region. They include prestigious developments such as the Dubai International Airport Concourse D, New Doha International Airport, Yas Waterworld (Abu Dhabi), Abu International Airport Arrives Hall and Tunnel, Park Hyatt (Saadiyat Island), Dubai Marina Mall and Hotel, Kempinski Hotel (Mall of the Emirates), Medinat Jumeirah Resort (Phase 3) and Shangrila Qaryat Beri (Abu Dhabi). Significantly, the new resort will be the second luxury property in the Sultanate to sport the brand of the luxury Thai hotel operator, Anantara. Epitomising laid-back luxury, intuitive service and a sense of discovery, Anantara made its debut in the Sultanate when it signed a contract last October for the operation of the Al Baleed Anantara Resort Spa in Dhofar Governorate.
The five-star property, which is a 50/50 joint venture between the government tourism investment company Omran and privately owned Musstir LLC, is currently under construction adjoining the Al Baleed Unesco World Heritage archaeological site in Salalah. The resort, featuring 30 hotel rooms located in a central hotel building, 106 pool villas, health spa, recreational facilities and specialty restaurant, is due to be launched in 2016. As with all of its branded properties located in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, the Jabal Akhdar Anantara Hotel Resort Spa will aim to draw on the natural beauty, unique flora, and rich cultural heritage of its settings to offer guests a singular resort experience. While the property is slated for launch during 2016, the mountain region’s first 5-star hotel — the Alila Jabal Akhdar Resort — is already preparing to open its doors to guests during the first half of this year. Set amongst a stunning landscape overlooking a dramatic valley, the luxury resort and spa development will feature 86 suites and spa facilities, alongside a cliff-side restaurant and pool. Singapore-based Alila Hotels Resorts has been selected by owners, Omran, to operate the property. (OEPPA Business Development Dept)
