KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 27 — Generation Y made an average of five overseas trips in the past two years as compared with three overseas trips by the older age groups, according to a Visa survey.
The ‘Global Travel Intentions Study 2013’ found that Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan were the top travel destinations for youths aged between 25 and 34, while Korea came up as the most desired travel destination for future travel plans.
In a statement today, Visa said the group aged 35 and above ranked Australia as their preferred destination of choice.
Malaysia Visa Country Manager Stuart Tomlinson said the study revealed that the trend was due to increased affordability and wider choices of overseas travel offered by budget airlines and travel aggregator sites.
“Gen Y’s tech-savviness has also been a key part of this trend, allowing them to make full use of the Internet to search for the best airfares, room
rates and travel packages for their overseas holidays and to easily book online with their Visa card,” Tomlinson said.
According to the study, some 81 per cent of Malaysia’s Gen Y tended to spend 14 weeks to plan their vacation to ensure they get the most out of their holidays.
Gen Y travellers were concerned of the quality of hotel accommodation, with 44 per cent choosing to stay at four-star hotels or higher rated hotels or resorts.
A total of 12,631 respondents aged 18 and above across 25 markets in Asia Pacific, Europe, Africa, Middle East and the Americas participated in the study that is conducted through online and offline surveys. — Bernama
