The rankings are based on an annual global peer and expert survey of over 1950 experts and peer institutions. — Picture by Choo Choy MayKUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 — The Centre for Public Policy Studies (CPPS) was recently accorded global recognition as it ranked among the top-10 think tanks with a small budget across the world.
The research arm of the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (Asli) was ranked the seventh best think tank in the Asia and Pacific region in the 2013 Global Go To Think Tanks report—a significant leap from their previous rank of 16th place in the 2012 report.
The Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) took the top spot, followed by New Zealand’s Centre for Strategic Studies in second and Australia’s Lowy Institute in third place.
Another Malaysian think tank, the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (Isis) ranked 10th place to round off the region’s top-10 think tanks in a survey by US-based University of Pennsylvania.
Asli chief executive Tan Sri Michael Yeoh said CPPS has conducted numerous policy roundtables and submitted many public policy proposals to the government over the eight years it has been in existence.
“Asli continues to support CPPS for its useful role of public policy research and advocacy and will strive to maintain high ethical and professional standards in carrying out our work,” he said in a statement on Asli’s official webpage.
CPPS is also the only Malaysian think tank to be included in the global Transparency and Good Govenance Think Tanks list at number 27.
The Global Go To Think Tanks report is an annual report that has been published since 2008.
This year a total of 6,603 think tanks from 182 countries were invited to participate in the process and involved journalists, policy makers, public and private donors, among others.
The rankings are based on an annual global peer and expert survey of over 1950 experts and peer institutions, with the aim of recognising leading public policy think tanks and their contributions to government and civil society.
