SINGAPORE: Over 200 children from family service centres (FSCs) and youth volunteers set out to collect birthday wishes and stories about Singapore on Sunday.

The project, “Youths Give Back!”, hopes to foster a sense of community and belonging in the children from FSCs.

The project is spearheaded by Tiong Bahru Community Centre Youth Executive Committee.

It brings together student volunteers from Anderson Junior College and children from Thye Hua Kwan Family Service Centre @ Tanjong Pagar.

The student volunteers approached people to sign their birthday wishes for Singapore on banners, each decorated with 48 hearts.

At the same time, they gathered favourite memories about growing up in Singapore.

These stories will be re-produced by the children in writing or in drawing and displayed at the neighbourhood void decks and community spaces to create a greater sense of belonging.

The inaugural project comes under a new initiative spearheaded by Senior Minister of State for Law and Education Ms Indranee Rajah.

Called Project Aspire, it uses education to bring upward social mobility to children from FSCs.

Ms Indranee said: “The kind of Singapore we are going to be depends on the kind of people you are going to be.

“So these projects that you do – helping other Singaporeans, thinking about our heritage, thinking about our past, thinking about our future – all these things are going to go into that whole big flow of forces that make up future Singapore.”
