Singapore"s travel industry partners get behind Heritage Race for good

Singapore’s travel industry is joining forces behind the first Heritage Race to be run next Thursday, June 12, and which will raise funds for the Lee Ah Mooi Old Age Home, a nursing care facility for the underprivileged and elderly.

Companies such as Abacus International, INFOR, Trust International and Zhongshan Mall are sponsoring the race with contributions and those supporting with teams include, Skyscanner, TripAdvisor and Starwood Hotels Resorts.

The race, which is co-organised by travel editor Yeoh Siew Hoon, and the Ramada and Days Hotels Singapore At Zhongshan Park, will see participants visit and discover 20 heritage spots along the Balestier Heritage Trail, curated by the National Heritage Board.

The race is open to anyone – travel industry professionals, locals or tourists – interested in uncovering local heritage stories in Singapore for a good cause. Registration is open to individual participants (S$30 per person) or teams of two to six people. The first three teams to finish the race with the most number of attractions will win cash prizes of S$1,800 for the first team, second S$1,000 and third prize S$500.

The race is aimed at bringing out the stories of the Balestier district, a new and upcoming area for tourists, given the flurry of hotel developments that have popped up in the area of late. It remains one of Singapore’s most authentic and original historic areas dating back 180 years and houses attractions such as the Sun Yat-Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall and the former Shaw Malay film studio where legendary star P Ramlee made many of his films.

The race brief will begin at 12 noon at Ramada Singapore’s Balestier Ballroom and the race will flag off at 1pm. Each participant will be given a “passport” containing information on the trail and the 20 spots that must be visited. The participants will then have their passport stamped at each locale.

“We wanted an event where everyone – those working in travel, tourists and local residents – could learn about local stories, have fun and do good, all at the same time,” said Yeoh Siew Hoon, director of SHY Ventures and who is also the editor and founder of WIT, a content and community portal for online travel industry professionals.

“The Balestier area is one of Singapore’s best kept secrets and we want people to learn about how special this precinct is. The race was a good way of bringing out those stories and we are delighted to be the organizer of the first Heritage Race,” said Tony Cousens, general manager, Ramada and Days Hotels Singapore At Zhongshan Park.

“WIT’s Heritage Race is an inspired example of Corporate Social Responsibility and we are delighted to be collaborating on this unique fund-raising event. CSR is part of the culture at Abacus and we enjoy being active, with social and environmental programs. This time, we’re running too, so good luck all entrants and thank you for honouring Singapore’s older residents on June 12th,” said Robert Bailey, president and CEO, Abacus International.

Held as part of the Singapore Tourism Board’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2014, the Heritage Race is supported by the STB as well as other industry partners including Sun Yat-Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall and National Heritage Board.
