Enugu Rangers seek end to title drought

Enugu Rangers have stated that they are expecting a very impressive season like they had two seasons ago that catapulted them to the lucrative CAF Champions League competition. The Flying Antelopes blew hot and cold throughout last season with some inconsistent performances and it disrupted their target of another shot on the continent despite their late rally to nick it.

The Coal City side paid for their free fall in the first half of the season and by the time they would realise what was amiss the league contest was already almost settled and they had to battle for the fifth spot which they got with 58 points from 38 matches.

They were only five points adrift of eventual champions Kano Pillars who picked 63 points  and only missed a place in Africa by a paltry three points.

Rangers general manager, Paul Chibuzor Ozor has explained to Goal that the Flying Antelopes would target a turnaround in the league and the Federation Cup to make another sensational return to the continent at the end of the next season.

He said this after Rangers’ triumph in the Sapele Unity Cup-a tournament recently concluded in Sapele among three premier league clubs and three amateur teams. Rangers, Dolphins and Warri Wolves were the teams from the elite division and they were joined by JS Atete and two more from Delta State.

”We are working towards ending our trophy-less run next season. We have been looking for a way to end that now for close to 30 years. We believe next season will be our year,” Ozor told Goal.

“We have started very well and with more quality friendly matches and good welfare package for the players and officials of the club, the sky will be our starting point next season.”

The Coal City side beat Dolphins on penalties in an entertaining final last Sunday in Sapele. Rasaq Adegbite put Rangers ahead in the encounter before former player of the Enugu side, Ifeanyi Egwin equalised against the run of play for Dolphins.

Rangers eventually nicked the trophy on penalties to the admiration of Ozor and the club’s technical crew.
