Travel round-up: Be a devil and check out life in Tasmania

Say g’day to the UK’s first travel company dedicated to Tasmania.

Specialising in tailor-made breaks to the Aussie island state, Tasmanian Odyssey says much of the accommodation on offer has not previously been available to book through

a British holiday firm.

Tassie

is known as prime walking and fishing territory and famed for the Tasmanian devil – a carnivorous marsupial – and curried scallop pies.

It’s

about the size of Ireland and an archipelago consisting of 334 islands with a major tract of pristine, temperate rainforest with Unesco world heritage status.

Sample touring holidays include a Meet The Locals trip with stays in a range of

Tasmanian-owned accommodation and close encounters with local wildlife from £950 per person for 12 nights with car hire, not including flights Down Under. tasmanianodyssey.com, 01534 735 449.

Want to go to Hull and back to check out the new UK City of Culture 2017?

The Yorkshire port scooped the accolade this week and is promising a spectacular programme of events including an opening ceremony with four rivers of light, elephants, trawlermen and dancing white phone boxes.

Tourist chiefs are hoping for a £184million boost to the city between 2015 and 2020 as a result of the title.

Giza holiday

More

travel restrictions to Egypt have been lifted by the Foreign Commonwealth Office – it’s no longer advising against visiting Cairo and

the Pyramids at Giza. Two weeks ago the FCO said Luxor, Aswan and Alexandria were back on the holiday radar. gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt.

Festive cheer is right here

Santa and his little helpers are putting the finishing touches to their winter wonderland at LaplandUK, which opens in a pine forest on the Windsor

Estate next Saturday.

Visitors can visit the elves’ toy factory before moving on to Mother Christmas’s kitchen and gathering for

traditional storytelling.

Then

it’s time to go skating and meet huskies and reindeer before getting to

meet Father Christmas himself.

Timely return

The illustrious 140 year old Thomas Cook European Rail Timetable is back on track for 2014. Publishing of the train and ferry timetable ended in August when the firm axed its publishing arm.

But it has now reached agreement with former employee John Potter to allow him to print it again through an independent company, from February. First known as Cook’s Continental Time Tables, and published since 1873 (with a break for the Second World War), it was seen as the “rail bible”. europeanrailtimetable.eu

If you’re visiting one of the poorer countries, for example in Africa, remember to take lots of stationery, writing books and sweets to give out to the children on visits to orphanages and schools. They are very highly appreciated. David Webster, Taunton, Somerset

Digital ads to the info

British

Airways has unveiled an advertising first – digital billboards in London that interact with its aircraft overhead. As a BA jet passes over, it triggers an image of a child on the board pointing up at the plane accompanied by its flight number and where it’s coming from – for example, “It’s the BA0234 from Los Angeles” – followed by a message about the route. The billboards are in Chiswick and Piccadilly. ba.com.

the airport.

at the airport, passengers will see staff wearing items from a new 21-piece collection of co-ordinated uniforms created by London’s Jermyn Street Design. They replace the previous 16 different ones. gatwickairport.com.
