International flights to Canberra Airport are also on the agenda, after last week’s ACT budget included a renewed $600,000 package designed to woo international carriers to schedule direct flights from locations including Singapore and New Zealand.

The visit to Singapore and Hong Kong will also include about 30 Canberra businesses, business and tourism leaders, and representatives of the University of Canberra, the Australian National University and Canberra Airport.

Mr Tan’s visit to Canberra does not including meetings with the ACT Treasurer.

Singapore Business Council of Australia founding president Andrew Foo welcomed Mr Tan’s visit to Canberra as an opportunity to strengthen ties between the two countries.

“I think the population, space and opportunities in agribusiness, tourism and infrastructure attract Singaporean companies to Australia,” Mr Foo said.

“[There"s] always been good investment in Australia. I think Singaporeans always viewed Australia in a favourable way, [Singaporean companies] have been investing for a long time.”

Last month, Mr Tan was among 500 people who attended a celebration for Singapore-based alumni of Australian universities at the residence of Australian high commissioner Philip Green.

More than 100,000 Singaporeans have studied at Australian universities.

A new 191-room hotel at Canberra Airport will be built in a partnership with part-owned Singaporean company Toga Far East Hotels.

The seven-storey hotel will be built near the new terminal’s entrance under the Vibe Hotel brand.

The company is a joint-venture between Australian family-owned company Toga Group and Far East Hospitality, Singapore’s largest private property developer.
