On Monday, the Las Vegas Sands Corp finally brought its worldwide sites online following a hack attack that forced the company to shutter its websites and other operations online all of last week, said a spokesperson for the company.
The spokesperson, Ron Reese announced that the new sites were not identical versions of the ones that had been hacked. He said certain content had been changed on the company’s new sites, but he declined to let on what other changes had been made.
On Friday, Sands began to make progress in restoring emails for employees, who had also been targeted by hackers, said Reese.
Las Vegas Sands is the owner of the Venetian which is also on the Strip, as well as casinos located in Singapore and China.
The company is working with Internet investigators in an attempt to identify who hacked its websites and exposed sensitive information of their employees including their social security numbers, said Reese.
Instead of the usual display, the website when hacked showed a U.S. map with flames marking the casino locations of the Las Vegas Sands, as well as the photo of Sheldon Adelson the Chairman of the Sands and Benjamin Netanyahu the Prime Minister of Israel.
In addition, two messages were typed on the screen. One said for “Damn A” not to let the throat cut the tongue and the other said that encouraging weapons of mass destruction use, under whatever condition is breaking the law.
Adelson contributes millions of dollars to causes that are conservative and caused great controversy in October of last year when he suggested that the U.S. fire nuclear bombs at Iran instead of negotiating with them.
Reese said that the Sands was attempting to determine if any information of customers was accessed in the hacking last week.
The cyber attack hit on February 10 and shutdown the email system of the company. The following day the websites China, Singapore and the U.S. casinos were knocked off line. Messages that read “undergoing maintenance” were put up on the sites’ home page for close to week.
