CHARITY CRICKET:
It’s mate against mate, club versus club in Friday night’s invitational McGrath Foundation Pink Stumps cricket match at Kitchener Park.
Hosted by the Gunnedah District Cricket Association, two local teams will battle for pink supremacy in the charity event which provides support for women with breast cancer through provision of breast care nurses.
The Kangaroos side will be captained by association President, Mike Silver, and fielded by players who have toured overseas with the Gunnedah Schoolboys Kangaroos in the last 15 years.
They will challenge the Galahs – a team featuring many of the more senior players from the grade competition and led by Paul Lodge.
Yesterday the team captains stood face-to-face and fired their first shots across the bow.
“I don’t know about the Galahs, they probably should be calling us the All-Stars looking at the team list… it’s a pretty good side,” Lodge chuffed, tongue planted firmly in cheek.
“It’s pretty strong across the board, we’ve got a good bowling attack and certainly a good batting line-up. I reckon we’ll probably bat down to nine or ten (batsmen).
“I won’t be taking it easy on their captain either, I can assure you of that.
“I think the boys will be pretty keen to make sure he doesn’t get away with too much.”

The sides feature some outstanding players – Ben Middlebrook, Jamie Mitchell, Eddie McGuirk and Grant McIlveen all who played for Central North while Cameron Milne is a South Australian Country player.
In the Kangaroos team Andy Mack, David Silver and Farran Lamb have been members of Central North under age and colts sides.
Promising women’s cricketer Jordan Lumby has been selected in the Kangaroos side. The all-rounder will be playing cricket in Lancashire UK over the Australian winter following solid performances in the NSW Breakers program recently.
“I am delighted to invite Jordan to play with the Kangaroos in this important charity match – Jordan is an outstanding women’s cricketer,” Mr Silver said.
The Kangroos side features Ryan Pryde who was a schoolboy tourist to Malaysia and Singapore in 1999 with the rest of the team made up of the 2002 and 2006 New Zealand tourists.
Silver is looking forward to playing in and leading the Kangaroos, having managed the schoolboys on two tours of New Zealand.
He added the umpires will be well known local arm chair cricket critics David Callaghan and David Partridge.
The McGrath Foundation was established by former Australian fast bowler Glen McGrath in memory of his late wife Jane who died in 2008 aged 42 after a long battle with breast cancer.
This summer the McGrath Foundation engaged its 100th breast care nurse and Silver encouraged the community to show their support by dressing in pink and getting down to the game.
“Breast cancer is something that sadly affects many families in our community, so this is a real opportunity for families to enjoy a terrific evening of cricket and support an outstanding cause – that of breast care nurses for women with breast cancer,” he said.
“All proceeds from the evening will go to the McGrath Foundation.
“As with the pink day at the Sydney Test, those attending are encouraged to wear pink.”
Full canteen facilities will be available and McGrath Foundation merchandise will be on sale. Entry to the ground will be by gold coin donation for adults, with children free. Play starts 6.30pm on Friday.
