SINGAPORE — Singapore saw a record 15.5 million international visitor arrivals and an increase in tourism spending last year, said the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) in its tourism sector performance report released today (17 Feb).
STA said the 7.2 per cent increase in international visitor arrivals from the previous year showed that Singapore remains attractive as a destination.
Although Singapore also raked in a record S$23.5 billion in tourism receipts last year, it also recorded a slower increase as compared to previous years.
Chief Executive Lionel Yeo said this was largely due to the availability of low cost carriers that resulted in customers spending less on air fares.
Likewise, there was a six per cent increase in business travelers to Singapore last year, yet business travel spending dropped by six per cent, which Mr Yeo said could be due to both cutbacks on corporate travel budgets as well as “cyclical factors” related to the uncertainty in the global economy.
