Singapore Changi Airport commenced (05-Nov-2013) construction of its 195,000sqm terminal four. The terminal is scheduled to be complete in 2017 and will increase the airport’s passenger capacity by 16 million to 82 million p/a. The facility is expected to improve passengers’ travel experience and increase operational efficiency and productivity for airlines and airport agencies. The terminal will be able to serve full-service and low-cost airlines at 17 contact stands with aerobridges for narrowbody aircraft and four for widebody aircraft. The airport is also constructing 17 narrowbody and nine widebody aircraft stands to provide additional parking space. The terminal will feature a dedicated ramp control tower and include self-service and automated options at check-in, bag drop, immigration and boarding. A dedicated airside shuttle will operate between terminal four and terminal two. Terminal four will include 15,000sqm of retail and food and beverage space, with outlets “comparable to the range and variety” available at the airport’s existing terminals. The facility will have 1500 landside car parking spaces and a free shuttle service to other terminals. The terminal is designed by a consortium led by SAA Architects. Changi Airport Group CEO Lee Seow Hiang said, “With T4, we are rethinking travel, exploring how key operational functions can be designed differently to optimise process flow, interior space, as well as manpower resources…In the aspects of architecture, layout and technology, we have future-proofed the terminal so that it can adjust to changing requirements of the industry.” Singapore’s Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew said terminal four would be used as a test-bed for concepts for the future terminal five, including terminal design and the use of technology to increase productivity and economise space.
