MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines continued to trail behind its neighbors in Southeast Asia in terms of motor vehicle production in the nine months to September, according to the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF).
Data from the AAF showed that as of end-September, the Philippines had the lowest motor vehicle output in the region, as it manufactured 58,326 units, up slightly from the 57,761 units in the same period last year.
In the same period, Thailand assembled a total of 1.736 million vehicles; Indonesia produced 882,009 vehicles, Malaysia manufactured 439,868 vehicles, and Vietnam made 64,183 vehicles.
The Philippines, however, was in the middle of the pack in terms of motor vehicle sales in the January to September period as it sold 131,381 units which grew 17.7 percent from the 111,585 units in the same period last year.
The Philippines’ sales performance was behind Thailand’s 939,342 units, Indonesia’s 908,279 units and Malaysia’s 487,970 units, but ahead of Vietnam’s 69,003 units, Singapore’s 24,996 units and Brunei’s 14,115 units.
As for the production of motorcycles and scooters, while the Philippines saw the number of manufactured units rise year-on-year in the nine-month period, it was still behind most ASEAN countries with assembly operations.
The Philippines assembled 540,082 units as of end-September, up 25.9 percent from the 429,033 units in the comparable period last year.
The latest result was lower than Indonesia’s 5.81 million units and Thailand’s 1.575 million units, but higher than Malaysia’s 413,560 units.
The Philippines was also in the middle in the region in terms of motorcycle and scooter sales.
The country sold 545,544 units in the nine month period, climbing by 7.2 percent from 508,910 units in the same period a year ago.
The country’s sales performance was lower compared to Indonesia’s 5.813 million units and Thailand’s 1.438 million units, but better than Malaysia’s 415,348 units and Singapore’s 8,681 units.
The Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. has urged the government to release the road map for the industry within the year, citing that such will be necessary in determining future investments here.
