The Renewable Energy Developers Caucus (REDC) and National Power Corporation (NPC), together with Global-Link MP Events International Inc., formally announced the 2nd Philippine Solar Summit Exhibit and Conference to be held August 15 to 17 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex. Speaking before industry leaders during the Solar Day 2013, Tetchi Cruz-Capellan, REDC Convenor and founder of the Philppine Solar Power Alliance (PSPA) bared the pioneering event focusing on off-grid and rooftop solar solutions.
“Our sector is making headway with the number of completed rooftop installations and the upcoming projects in the 2013 pipeline,” said Tetchi Cruz-Capellan. “As of December 2012, the industry recorded some 1.12 megawatts of grid-tied solar rooftop installations in the country. The sector is confident that with rising electricity cost due to increasing fuel prices, another 5 megawatts are set to be installed in homes and offices by the end of this year – that’s about 500 percent industry growth that the industry is looking at.”
Tetchi Cruz-Capellan was recently honored as the first Filipina Woman of Year in the global forum on power and electricity held in Singapore last week. Among her achievements is the launch of the Solar Summit in 2011 which brought together in the Philippine market renowned global solar energy developers, world-class components manufacturers, balance of system suppliers, and LOCAL distributors of solar energy solutions and technologies. About 70 companies, 21 speakers (local and foreign), 543 delegates, and 22,080 trade visitors attended the event last year.
“To put it simply: the industry response was overwhelming,” shared Capellan. “It was clear proof that solar energy is gaining ground and the industry is fast developing. The feedback from delegates and exhibitors were simple encouraging. It was undoubtedly successful and we are certain that the second year will even better.”
Capellan cited the huge untapped potentials in the market: roughly 285 megawatts if the construction trend in the last 3 years will serve as basis. The timing of the Philippine Solar Summit could not have been better as the government crafts its renewable energy road map and begins to roll ou the net metering regime which will include the off-grid sector.
The approval of the interconnection rules will push for more RE projects on rooftops, maximizing the potential for solar energy in mitigating rising electricity cost.

As Solar Day kicks off its 1st commemoration, the Philippine Solar Summit in August this year will highlight the 3rd quarter of 2013. This event is supported by the National Power Corporation and the technology exhibiiton will bring storage solutions, do-it-yourself solar kits, inverters, monitoring systems and software, portable solar power source, solar lanterns and lighting systems, solar module: thin film, PV, and solar thermal, solar mounting systems, and solar water systems, among others.
