Fashionistas are dumping their houses like homeownership is out of style. But the good news is that buying a designer’s home means moving into a pad that’s already dressed for success.
“Homes that are owned by fashion designers are a reflection of their style,” says Corina Galen of Redfin realtors in Los Angeles. “When these people entertain, it reflects their style and tastes.”
One of the more stylish finds for summer is Guess co-founder Armand Marciano’s 20-acre Beverly Hills estate. Marciano sold a lot of denim to buy the $54.5 million pad that has nine fireplaces, a 27-car garage, a wine cellar and a pool house complete with kitchen and pizza oven.
Those seeking something a bit more modest can slip into Fabrizio Gianni president Guy Attal’s $25.5 million 90210 pad, which has a bowling alley, putting green and movie theater. This house was built for Bert Lahr, who played the Cowardly Lion in the “Wizard of Oz,” and has since been inhabited by Betty Grable, Paul McCartney, Melanie Griffith and the Osbourne family.
House hunters looking to do Bev Hills on a budget should consider Bebe manufacturing VP Paul Mashouf’s Tuscan style home on Laurel Way, which is selling for a bargain basement price of just under $4.8 million. Having only four bedrooms and seven bathrooms the abode is relatively humble for the area, but it’s hard to complain about the neighborhood.
“When you’re walking down Rodeo Drive it’s very much like ‘Sex and the City,’ ” says Galen. “Everyone is wearing labels head to toe, except the tourists.”
Like Beverly Hills, Miami is a good place to pick up a well-appointed house of fashion in a warm climate. For $14.9 million, shoppers can purchase a Venetian Island pad that was commissioned by Luca Formilli Fendi.
Those who don’t get blinded by the $19 million price tag might want to check out the 2-acre Biscayne Bay home of Sunglass Hut scion Dean Ziff. It comes with a tennis court, pool and guesthouse.
Versace’s $100 million house is also back on the market. Though the designer was killed here in 1997, the Miami mansion’s 10 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms and 54-foot-long 24-karat gold-lined pool lives on.
According to Galen, “the Versace home is definitely a reflection of the designer’s style … it’s classy.”
