With the country’s economy gaining momentum, the Singapore Tourism Board is targeting about one million Indians to visit the island country this year.
“We have partnered with four travel agents in the country, who will in turn work with air carriers to finalise travel packages,” said GB Srithar, area director (South Asia), Singapore Tourism Board.
Currently, eight international airlines operate 430 flights a week between India and Singapore offering over 40,000 seats. The board is exploring the possibility of partnering with SilkAir and Tiger Airways, both of which operate from Hyderabad, to offer tailor-made packages.
Indians prefer nature-related travel and new attractions like ‘River Safari’ and ‘Gardens of Bay’ are expected to boost tourist arrivals from India, he said. The board is in dialogue with film makers and regional television channels to facilitate their travelogue programmes.
About 8.7 lakh visited that country in 2011 and 6.7 lakh as of September 2012. Singapore is expecting China, India and Indonesia to be Asia’s top three outbound markets by 2020.
“Top 15 countries accounted for 76 per cent of international visitors in 2012, with India being the fifth largest visitor source market after Indonesia, China, Malaysia and Australia, and the third largest tourism receipt contributor after Indonesia and China,” Srithar said.
