Cashed-up Chinese gamblers will be flown to the snowfields to dabble in winter sports as James Packer casts his hotel-casino package as an unforgettable tourism experience.

It follows plans by Crown to develop new tourist attractions at Barangaroo and fly guests to a ”luxury day retreat” at the Packer Hunter Valley estate, prompting claims the casino’s economic benefits will be trapped inside the family empire.

Many Asian casinos have added sophisticated non-gambling attractions such as theme parks, museums and theatres.

High rollers and their guests would be flown by helicopter from Sydney Airport to Perisher, where they would be offered private ski trips and lessons. Crown says the move would give Chinese tourists ”a taste of winter sports and Australia’s alpine fauna and flora”.

The Perisher Ski Resort and Perisher Valley Hotel are owned by Crown’s major shareholder, Consolidated Press Holdings.

Mr Packer also plans to fly casino guests to his family estate in the Hunter Valley, known as Ellerston. Visitors would enjoy a day spa, go-karting, mountain biking, polo and rounds on an existing 18-hole private golf course designed by Greg Norman. They would fly to Scone via sea plane from Rose Bay. Guests would also be offered exclusive access to Melbourne’s Capital Golf Club course.

Mr Packer will also provide his superyacht Seahorse to entertain high-rollers in Sydney.

The state government last week gave conditional approval to the $1.5 billion Crown bid.

Crown’s proposal says the rising Chinese middle class is flocking to golf, skiing and snowboarding in growing numbers, and extra attractions would provide a package of ”unique and memorable” experiences critical to luring high net worth gamblers to Sydney.

”The real test in today’s highly competitive tourism market is not to get someone to visit your resort, it’s to keep them coming back for more,” a company spokesman said.

The Crown bid also shows it is working with architects and designers to develop concepts for ”other tourist attractions” at Barangaroo. Such drawcards at its overseas resorts had become ”iconic features of their host city”.

Many Asian casinos have added sophisticated non-gambling attractions such as theme parks, museums and theatres. Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands features three towers linked by a giant rooftop pool complex.

One of Crown’s casino assets in Macau, City of Dreams, includes The House of Dancing Water, a theatre show touted as ”the world’s largest water extravaganza”, and the Vquarium – an aquarium-themed video installation featuring ”virtual mermaids”.

The Crown spokesman said potential public attractions at Barangaroo included high-end restaurants and bars, a panoramic viewing area and ”other on site amenities”.

Greens MP John Kaye said the suite of attractions would create a ”sealed system effect” in which profits would be trapped ”within the world of James Packer”.

The Crown spokesman said benefits would flow to the broader economy including other tourism operators and businesses providing goods and services to the facilities.
