As part of the government’s endeavour to attract more tourists to the country, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, through the Bureau of Immigration (BoI), has taken steps to extend its ‘visa-on-arrival’ scheme to the Kochi international airport too. The BoI has already started issuing visa-on-arrival at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata airports since January 2013. According to the PRO of CIAL, papers carrying consent of the airport for the ‘visa-on-arrival’ scheme have already been sent to the ministry for verification and other formalities. Once the verification is completed, the nod for the scheme would be given. Based on the norms, the CIAL has to provide more space to the BoI for carrying out the routine visa procedures, including spaces for additional offices, waiting rooms, refreshments etc, for which, provisions are already being made, the PRO said.
To begin with, the visa-on-arrival will be made available to the nationals of 11 countries, including Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Laos, Myanmar and Indonesia.
Foreign nationals visiting India for recreation, sight-seeing, or to meet relatives and friends, and those arriving for medical treatment, will be issued visa on arrival. The PRO said under normal circumstances, a visa-on-arrival will be issued for a period of 30 days.
