Travellers are returning home with hundreds of dollars in unused foreign currency, according to the results of a new study.

The Visa Payment Attitudes Study revealed that people bring home an average of US$285.

While the majority of respondents said they kept the cash for future use, one in five admitted to giving it away or forgetting about the money altogether.

Singaporeans returned home with US$625 in unused currency, while Indonesians, South Koreans and Taiwanese brought back the equivalent of just US$1.

The study said consumers are turning to debit cards to resolve these issues, with 54 percent of respondents admitting a debit card is more convenient than carrying large amounts of cash.

Almost the same amount of respondents said debit cards were good for financial management as they know that the payment is debited directly from their regular bank account.

“More people are realising the benefits of visa debit cards compared with cash, particularly for overseas travel,” Visa country manager Singapore and Brunei Ooi Huey Tyng said.
