SINGAPORE — The Republic expects overseas visitor arrivals to grow at a slower pace of between 2.8 and 7.6 per cent this year, hurt by a tight domestic labour market that has made it harder for firms to expand, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said yesterday.
Singapore hopes to attract 14.8 to 15.5 million visitors this year, an increase from last year’s estimated 14.4 million.
The STB is targeting tourism receipts of S$23.5 billion to S$24.5 billion this year, up from last year’s estimate of S$23 billion.
Visitor arrivals last year rose by 9.1 per cent over 2011, while tourism receipts grew around 3 per cent to S$23 billion. In 2011, arrivals grew 13.1 per cent.
Arrivals from China grew 23 per cent to hit 1.5 million — an all-time high. Tourism receipts from China grew 18 per cent to a record S$1.86 billion.
Said STB Chief Executive Lionel Yeo: “If you look at the pipeline of attractions, we have the River Safari that is due to open in a few months’ time. We will have a full year in which the Marine Life Park is in operation. There are a number of factors that would continue to draw visitors to Singapore.”REUTERS, CHANNEL NEWSASIA
