So does Singapore have a proper clubbing culture like party central cities Miami and Ibiza?

The answer, according to Dutch celebrity deejay and music producer Afrojack‘s a resounding “Yes”.

“I think Singaporeans are a good bunch of party animals and it’s comparable to the people back in Holland where we don’t usually go out to bars to hang out but we go straight to the dance clubs to have a good time. Same goes for those in Miami and Ibiza,” said the 25-year-old globe-trotting deejay during a recent stopover in Singapore.

So has he ever been witness to crazy after-parties during his last two visits to Singapore when he was invited to spin at mega-dance festival ZoukOut in 2010 and Zouk Singapore in 2011?

“I’m not sure how crazy the party people here can get because I’ve never been to an after party in Singapore although I have heard rumours that Singaporeans can get pretty crazy,” said the deejay whose real name is Nick van de Wall.

Life has been sweet for the young deejay from Spijkenisse, Netherlands who shot to fame after his club hit song, “Take Over Control”, became a platinum success in 2010.

Mixing electronic and “house” music together with the money-making mainstream RB and hip hop has reportedly made him one of the richest DJs in the world with a net worth of SGD $2.5 million. Apart from his touring, he also owns an imprint label called Wall Recordings, carrying a humble group of DJs including the popular DJ Sidney Samson.

A-List collaborations

He also now hangs with the cool set, collaborating regularly with music A-Listers such as Pitbull, Beyonce, David Guetta as well as today’s RB prince, Chris Brown, with whom he released a single called “As Your Friend” released last month.

And, of course, there are the girls.

After reportedly dumping hotel heiress Paris Hilton last year, Afrojack — a nickname born out of his former “afro” hairstyle and “jack” style of dance music — refused to confirm if he was currently dating anyone when he turned up for his interview with Yahoo! Singapore.

“I have been texting somebody… and that’s my mom and publicist,” said the deejay , dressed in his trademark hooded jacket and in between playing with his sneakers.

And what’s his ideal type of girl?

“Someone who is real and beautiful on the inside,” he added. “And when the time comes for me to settle down, I will let you know,” as he turned his eye on this reporter.

Perhaps the much sought-after deejay could be too busy for a serious relationship seeing that his main focus is becoming the life of the party in every city he gets paid to play.

‘Life of a party’

“Being the life of a party is a nice role to play plus it’s my job to keep people entertain and I love entertaining people,” he said before admitting he will “never get sick of parties”.

Confessing to sleeping a lot whenever he is not working, he said, “It gets really tough sometimes but you get used to it. I usually don’t sleep for three to four days, especially when I’m travelling halfway across the world.”

So after having been to Singapore three times, what does he think of the standard of Singapore deejays?

“I met DJ Ghetto on Wednesday at Zouk, he had pink hair and I thought he was pretty good,” he said regarding the 25 years old local DJ Ghetto – real name Hock Heng Chua – who is a two-time DJ champion for the renowned DMC World DJ Championships.

Whenever he does get the time to relax, his choice of songs would be those by long-time French electronic duo, Daft Punk, whose music is frequently played in the clubs here too.

“I like the latest by Daft Punk, I think it’s relaxing and I can wind down to it,” he says about the duo’s latest single “Get Lucky”, a groovy track that is several notches below Afrojack’s usual music tempo.

It seems the party never ends for Afrojack.
