Important for seniors to keep fit: Heng Swee Keat

SINGAPORE – The Pioneer Generation Package is useful, but it is equally important for older Singaporeans to keep fit to prevent health problems, Singapore’s Education Minister Heng Swee Keat said today (March 1).

The minister joined some 250 senior residents from Tampines at an event to educate them on staying safe and healthy.

It is part of the Tampines Central Wellness Programme, and held in conjunction with Changi General Hospital’s Occupational Therapists Day.

Seniors were also encouraged to stay socially active and participate in interest groups.

Mr Heng, an MP for the area, had briefed the participants on the recently announced Pioneer Generation Package.

He added that there are plans to ramp up such activities in Tampines to explain the details of the scheme.

Mr Heng elaborated: “It is not just about benefiting from the Pioneer Package. I am hoping to do it as… (what) as we did today, which is while explaining the details of the Pioneer Package, to also encourage them (the seniors) to join us in the wellness programme because ultimately it’s not just about the financial assistance when they fall sick but the ability to take active steps to keep themselves well.” CHANNEL NEWSASIA
