Kochi: The ‘Visa-on-Arrival’ (VoA) effected in Kerala in August is yet to become popular as only four people have so far availed of the facility at Thiruvananthapuram airport and only 10 in Kochi.
The two airports are among the only eight in the country to offer VoA and Kerala is the only state to have more than one airport offering the facility.
According to an official release, the highest number of VoA was issued at New Delhi (6,906) followed by Mumbai (2,549), Chennai (1,832), Kolkata (846), Bangalore (17) and Hyderabad (12) during the period from January to August 2013. A growth of 29.4 per cent has been recorded in the number of tourists who availed of the facility during the same period last year.
A total number of 12,176 VoA was issued in this period as compared to 9,412 VoA during the corresponding period of 2012. Japan availed of it the most (4,290), followed by New Zealand (2,165), Indonesia (1,688), the Philippines (1,652), Singapore (1,338), Finland (646), Vietnam (126), Luxembourg (102) Cambodia (78), Myanmar (78) and Laos (13).
The Centre launched the scheme in January 2010 for citizens of five countries – Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Singapore – who were coming to India as tourists.
The scheme was extended to six more countries – Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Laos and Myanmar – in January 2011.
