SINGAPORE: An original big sports event from Singapore with global appeal — that is the game plan of Ng Ser Miang after he successfully brought the Youth Olympics to Singapore in 2010.
The current vice-president of the Singapore National Olympic Council, Mr Ng was one of the six candidates who ran for the recent International Olympic Committee (IOC) president post.
The Singapore Grand Prix has put Singapore on the global sporting map, and the upcoming WTA Championships in women’s tennis is set to continue that trend.
But acting as a host for these mega sports events, Singaporeans did not have any real ownership.
Mr Ng, however, wants to change this and have an event for all Singaporeans.
He said: “One of the ideas is really for Singapore to think of investing into creating a special event of our own which can be on par with F1s or US Open, (or) Wimbledon.”
Singapore currently has the reputation, capability and resources to stage such an event, he added.
Details are being worked and Mr Ng plans to rope in local billionaire Peter Lim for the project.
On his failed IOC Presidency bid, Mr Ng said there are positives and he has been heartened by the warm reception Singaporeans gave him on his return home.
He said: “What I have learned from the campaign could be useful for future candidates and I am hopeful that there will be a candidate from Asia.”
Mr Ng added that the process for running for the IOC presidency is a long one, and that is why he wants to start grooming future sports leaders from Singapore.
