The number of poor people in Singapore, including those who are working and yet unable to make ends meet, is higher than government estimates indicate.
Income of 4,830 working households, accounting for about 2 per cent of all households, is below the S$1,250 (HK$7,717) for a four-person household in 2011 estimated by the Trade and Industry Ministry, local media reported.
A study has also shown that earnings of 70,000 to 90,000 households fell below S$1,500 a month and fall into the working poor bracket, the Straits Times reported.
These sobering observations about Singapore’s income inequality and poverty were made this week by an an academic and a lawmaker at a forum at National University of Singapore. They called for further studies on Singapore’s poverty.
The forum was told that Singapore does not have an official poverty definition.
An NUS survey also found that more than 60 per cent believe the poor get too little aid.
Most respondent said state program make things better and jobs are available for aid recipients, but only 15 per cent feel the jobs pay enough to support a family.
