NEW DELHI: Owing to the economic slowdown, visa on arrival (VoA) scheme registered negative growth as only 1,694 tourists availed the facility in August this year as compared to 1,750 in the same period last year, a decrease of 3.2 per cent.
Maximum of 678 Japanese tourists came to India using VoA route, followed by New Zealand – 257 and Philippines – 249, according to Tourism Ministry data.
Only three each from Cambodia and Laos availed the scheme, the data revealed.
However, 29 per cent more tourists availed the scheme during January-August, 2013, as against the corresponding period last year, the data showed.
A total of 12,176 VoAs have been issued in the eight-month period this year as compared to 9,412 VoAs during the same period of 2012.
To attract more foreign tourists to India, government had launched the VoA scheme for 11 countries — Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Laos and Myanmar.
