Vietnam and Singapore announced to elevate the bilateral relations to Strategic Partnership during Singaporean Prime Minister (PM) Lee Hsien Loong’s Vietnam visit on Wednesday.
The announcement was made at a press briefing after their talks in Hanoi. Addressing the press briefing, Vietnamese PM Nguyen Tan Dung said that the bilateral relations have been continuously strengthened during the past years and the achievement gained will create a great momentum for a more effective cooperation in the coming years.
Dung expressed his belief that the Strategic Partnership will not only map out new strategies to bring bilateral ties to a more intensive, effective and sustainable level but also contribute to the building of the ASEAN Community by 2015 as well as for peace, cooperation and development in the Asia-Pacific and the world.
For his part, the Singaporean PM said that the Strategic Partnership will be a foundation to boost cooperation, especially in defense, aviation and finance between the two countries.
Lee said the trade and investment cooperation between the two countries have been performed well in the past years, which is reflected through the four Vietnam-Singapore industrial parks.
During his visit to Vietnam, Lee and Dung will attend the ground-breaking ceremony of the 5th Vietnam-Singapore industrial park in Vietnam’s central Quang Ngai province.
After their talks, the two PMs witnessed the signing of publishing joint stamp to celebrate the 40th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations.
Singapore is now one of the biggest trade partners of Vietnam with bilateral trade turnover reached 9 billion US dollars in 2012. As of July 2013, Singapore has invested over 28 billion US dollars in Vietnam.
