Singapore"s military gathers to celebrate National Day


All SAF units – including overseas training detachments – will be holding observance ceremonies to celebrate National Day.

SINGAPORE: National Day Observance ceremonies took place all over the island on Friday (Aug 8), as the country prepares for its 49th birthday on Saturday.


More than 2,000 personnel from the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) recited the National Pledge and sang the National Anthem. 


Present at the National Day Observance Ceremony held at the MINDEF Building to celebrate Singapore’s 49th birthday were Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister of State for Defence Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman, Permanent Secretary for Defence Chan Yeng Kit, Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Ng Chee Meng, Permanent Secretary for Defence Development Major-General (NS) Ng Chee Khern, Service Chiefs and senior officials from MINDEF and the SAF.


During the ceremony, artistes from the SAF Music and Drama Company and children from Cherie Hearts @ Gombak performed, in line with this year’s National Day Parade theme of “Our People, Our Home”.


All SAF units – including overseas training detachments – will be holding observance ceremonies to celebrate National Day.


At the Istana, The President’s Office and Prime Minister’s Office also held a ceremony this morning, where President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and their staff enjoyed a performance by youths.


Another joint ceremony, with the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Law and Public Service Division, was commemorated at the Treasury. Deputy Prime Ministers Teo Chee Hean and Tharman Shanmugaratnam celebrated with over 1,000 public officers.
