A Scottish tourism video that features some of the country’s biggest stars has been named one of the worst of its type ever made.
The 2009 Homecoming Scotland video was placed at number five in the list of ‘hilarious tourism videos that miss the mark’ compiled by travel guide Wanderlust.
Set to the
music of Caledonia by Dougie MacLean, ten famous Scots lend their
voices to the short film, which features a backdrop of iconic Scottish
scenery.

Not a winning performance: Sir Chris Hoy was singled out for his ‘questionable singing’
Actor Sir Sean Connery, singer Lulu and Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy all appear in the clip.
They are joined by singers Amy Macdonald, Sandi Thom and Eddi Reader, actor Brian Cox, golfer Sam Torrance and international rugby players Thom Evans and Kelly Brown.
The 60-second advert was screened
regularly to raise awareness of Homecoming 2009, which encouraged Scots
to explore their Scottish heritage and to invite friends and family to
return home to the country.
At the time First Minister Alex Salmond said: ‘Caledonia is a song that resonates with Scots the world over. For those far away it is a reminder of strong bonds, full of the promise of return.
‘That is what makes it the perfect anthem for our Year of Homecoming……this advert will sing to Scots about what we have to celebrate.’
But five years on Wanderlust declared the advert a turkey.
‘Questionable singing from Scottish golfers and rugby players. And Sir Chris Hoy. At least Sean Connery had the good sense to do the spoken word bit,’ it said.
Topping the list of ‘nine hilarious tourism videos that miss the mark’ was an old tourism video for Barcelona. It appeared to suggest that the only thing worth seeing in the Spanish city was the fountains, filling nearly four minutes with repetitive shots of the water features in action.
At number two was a video for the Singapore Tourism Board, which the organisation had apparently tried to delete because it was so bad.
It shows a couple enjoying their wedding anniversary by riding the city’s cable car and visiting the solar-powered ‘supertrees’ at Gardens By The Bay – but the most wooden thing in the park is the acting.
The video culminates in a ‘surprise’ that will have most viewers reaching for the remote.
At three, an overlong 1970s video for Miami Beach Tourism entitled ‘Color Me Fun’ is straight out of an Austin Powers film. A series of chilled-out presenters reveal the ‘groovy’ delights tourists can expect, which include ‘fine restaurants, superb dining rooms and divine food’.
Viewers are shown ‘exciting places to eat exciting things’ such as stone crab. Another shot shows a woman marvelling at the fact that she has been able to order a corned beef sandwich.
If you make it to the end of the 13-minute-long video you won’t be feeling so groovy.
And in at number four a video for Riga in Latvia shows people flirting in restaurants and communicating ‘by doing weird things with napkins’.
Australia, Banff in Canada, Newfoundland and New Mexico made up the dubious list. See the list full here: http://bit.ly/1vsbzQ6
