Allen Overy won a total of eight awards at the 10th annual ALB SE Asia Law Awards, including the SE Asia Law Firm of the Year and the Emerging Markets Law Firm of the Year awards, while Freshfields’ managing partner, Stephen Revell, won the coveted Managing Partner of the Year award.
The gala event, held at the Fullerton Hotel in Singapore on May 29, also saw Drew Napier win the Commercial Litigation Law Firm of the Year title for the tenth consecutive time – the only firm to have won in that category for as long as the awards have been held – along with three deal awards.
All the other firms in the Big Four picked up key awards: Rajah Tann won the Arbitration Law Firm of the Year award, Allen Gledhill picked up the Real Estate Law Firm of the Year award, while WongPartnership was named the Singapore Deal Firm of the Year.
Meanwhile in the in-house category, the Asian Development Bank bagged the Banking and Financial Services In-House Team of the Year, the Innovative In-House Team of the Year and the SE Asia In-House Team of the Year awards.
“With 600 million consumers and the full establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015, ASEAN is increasingly attractive as an investment destination,” said Andrew Smart, managing director of Thomson Reuters’ Legal Media Group in his welcome speech. “The ALB SE Asia Law Awards reaffirms this position and provides its deal makers with an evening of networking and celebration. Congratulations are due to all the finalists and winners for their outstanding contributions to the regional economy.”
Allen Overy also won the Energy and Resources Law Firm of the Year, along with awards in five deal categories.
“Thank you to ALB and panel of judges for this raft of awards, we are of course delighted to have picked up so many with the two jewels in the crown being SE Asia Law Firm of the Year and Emerging Markets Law Firm of the Year,” said Chris Moore, Allen Overy’s Singapore managing partner. “It’s a great testament to the quality of our people across ASEAN where we now have six offices following our recent opening in Yangon, as well as the trust that our clients place in us to help them with their most important and challenging deals.
Baker McKenzie carried home the Intellectual Property Law Firm of the Year and the Thailand Deal Firm of the Year awards, in addition to deal awards.
The Guest of Honour was Chua Lee Ming, general counsel of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) and also vice-president of the Singapore Corporate Counsel Association (SCCA). “The Singapore Law Awards is the premier event that celebrates the fantastic job that lawyers, both private practice and in-house, did in the past year. The accolades are all the more valuable as they are primarily peer-driven,” said Chua. “A quick review of the nominations this year will tell anyone that exciting deals have been aplenty, so that’s good news for the industry. The Singapore Corporate Counsel Association is proud to be a part of this prestigious event.”
