Stereophonics" Kelly Jones on gigging in Japan, drinking in Japan and having ...

Getting struck down with a chest infection while Down Under this summer may have left him needing Just Enough Medication to Perform, but Stereophonics’ Kelly Jones has revealed how a drunken accident in the Far East earlier this month almost left him too crocked to rock.

As befitting the expression, ‘You can take the boy out of Cwmaman , but you can’t take Cwmaman out of the boy’, the incident happened after the Valleys-born singer decided to celebrate having played a slew of successful gigs in the Land of the Rising Sun by downing a crate of some locally brewed beer.

“I foolishly assumed the lager over there wouldn’t be that strong because the Japanese are only dwts – in fact, they’re not much bigger than me,” laughed the 39-year-old.

“As a result, me and Jamie our drummer ended up getting extremely drunk and, as we got back to the hotel in the early hours of the morning, I somehow managed to fall over him and twist my ankle something chronic.

“So, given that our flight from Tokyo was due to leave just a few hours later, Richard (Jones, bassist) had to wheel me all across the airport in one of those luggage trollies because I could barely walk,” he added.

And the next few gigs saw the dad-of-two hobbling around on stage with one of his legs tightly strapped.

“I was like the walking wounded at our gig in Singapore, and it’s still a bit sore and tender now if I’m honest,” said Jones, taking time out from rehearsing for his band’s special live performance on Radio Two last week.

“I’m actually in a dressing room backstage at the Beeb as we speak and I’m getting funny looks because I’m walking around like an ostrich to try to stretch the old muscles a bit.”

Jones went to explain how, given his recent track record for suffering mishaps, he had a few reservations about their upcoming tour of the US next month, in particular the trek’s final date south of the Mexican border with notoriously hard-living heavy rockers Queens Of The Stone Age.

“I’ve got this awful image in my head of us attempting to catch a plane after the show and it being like the ending of the movie The Wild Geese – you know, the one where Richard Burton and Roger Moore’s mercenaries are pegging it down some runway in Africa whilst being shot at from all sides,” he smiled, shaking his head.

“We always enjoy going to The States though, even if we’ve not got a massive following over there.

“That said, perhaps we can ride on the coat-tails of One Direction,” joked Jones. “They’re massive out there right now and, apparently, their manger is a fan of ours.

“And, if all else fails, I could always grow my hair to look like Harry Styles.”

But, no matter where the road takes him, life for the ’Phonics frontman is far more family-orientated these days, centring around his two young daughters Misty and Bootsy.

“Yeah, I don’t like to be away from them too long if I can help it,” he said.

“However, I do like to bring them along to our gigs whenever possible, so they can see what their old man does for a living.

“Actually, Bootsy came out on stage with me during our set at the V Festival the other day.

“She had a pair of big pink ear muffs on in case it got too loud and handed me my acoustic guitar so I could play the track Indian Summer off the latest album.

“She seemed to really enjoy being the centre to attention and wasn’t freaked out in slightest by all the people watching, so I think I know what route she’s going to go down when she gets older.”

And Jones, who plays three nights at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena in November, said he was chuffed the new LP, Graffiti On The Train, had gone back up to number six in the UK charts,  seven month s after its original release.

“If it goes platinum by the end of the year then I’ll be a very happy man,” he added.
