Singapore at important juncture: S Iswaran

SINGAPORE: Minister in Prime Minister’s Office S Iswaran has said Singapore is at an important juncture where its economy is undergoing a major transformation.

Socially, the country has an ageing population that will need more care and at the same time, there is a growing number of young well-educated Singaporeans who seek higher quality jobs.

Mr Iswaran was speaking at the West Coast National Day dinner on Saturday.

Mr Iswaran, who is also an MP in the West Coast GRC, said many citizens have shared their hopes and concerns through the Our Singapore Conversation. The government will continue to address Singaporeans’ concerns about housing, transport and healthcare, he said.

Mr Iswaran said: “Our challenge is to ensure that Singapore remains the best Home for our families, with a Heart that cares for every one, and Hope and opportunities for all. The government will work with all Singaporeans to chart a new path to realise this vision.”

Mr Iswaran said that at West Coast, there are plans to start a bursary programme for polytechnic students later this year.

There are also plans to offer a scheduled community bus service to the National University Hospital (NUH) for needy residents and an Active Ageing Centre.

Over at the Serangoon National Day dinner, Acting Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin encouraged Singaporeans to participate actively in programmes organised by community-based organisations.

This is important, he said, so that Singaporeans will get to know their neighbours better.

He added that Singaporeans have to continue to work towards preserving harmony.

Singapore’s security, social stability and economic success are, in large part, a result of harmonious relations between different races, he said.

Over at the Senja-Cashew National Day dinner, Environment and Water Resources Minister, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, shared with residents the areas of concern that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will be addressing in his National Day Rally Speech.

For one, the government will be looking at preschool education.

The other area is to provide more social safety nets for older citizens and ensuring that healthcare facilities are affordable.

Dr Balakrishnan also said the government will be looking at ways to help employers cope with fewer foreign workers while improving productivity.
