Enhancing Postpaid Customers With Glo Infinitiser

Emma Okonji examines the challenges of postpaid subscribers in roaming their lines as well as in making international and local calls, and how Glo Infinitiser seeks to address such challenges

Making international calls from local lines often turn out to be a nightmare to most telecoms subscribers because of the high charges that they incur in the communication process. Apart from making international calls from local networks, the idea of roaming mobile lines when the subscriber travels outside the country where the local network is domiciled, is another nightmare for the subscriber because of the high roaming charges. The postpaid telecoms landscape in Nigeria shows lots of confusion and complications, as postpaid customers pay costly tariff and enjoy additional features with additional charge.

But in a bid to address the high call rates on postpaid lines, Globacom recently launched the Glo Infinitiser, which seeks to reduce local and international call rates as never before.

The Glo Infinitiser offer, simplifies the current terrain and gives substantial benefits and more value to postpaid customers.

The new product, in addition to the free Glo to Glo calls and the free 1Gigabyte of data monthly, also offers 25 kobo per second for calls to other networks, N4 per message for on-net SMS and international calls at the rate of N9 per minute to 7 destinations, which include the US, UK landline, Canada, India, China, Singapore and Hong Kong. It is targeted at existing and potential prepaid and postpaid customers.

High Tariff

In wireless telecommunications, roaming is a general term referring to the extension of connectivity service in a location that is different from the home location where the service was registered. Roaming ensures that the wireless device is kept connected to the network, without losing the connection. The term “roaming” originates from Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) sphere and can also be applied to the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology. Traditional GSM roaming is defined as the ability of a cellular customer to automatically make and receive voice calls, send and receive data, or access other services, including home data services, when travelling outside the geographical coverage area of the home network, by means of using a visited network.

In countries where roaming service is offered, the tariff is always high, but of recent, most countries have begun the process of reducing roaming charges.

In April 2011, Singapore and Malaysia announced that they had agreed with operators to reduce voice and SMS rates for roaming between the two countries. In August 2012, Australia and New Zealand published a draft report proposing coordinated action on roaming services. This was followed by a final report in February 2013 recommending that the two countries equip their telecommunications regulators with an extended palette of regulatory remedies, when they investigate international roaming. The Australian and New Zealand Prime Ministers subsequently announced that they would introduce legislation to effect the recommendations of the final report.

Roaming fees are traditionally charged on per-minute basis and they are typically determined by the service provider’s pricing plan. Several carriers in both the United States and India have eliminated these fees in their nationwide pricing plans. All of the major carriers now offer pricing plans that allow consumers to purchase nationwide roaming-free minutes.

In Nigeria, Globacom, which has a passion for the reduction of call rates, both local and international, including roaming, recently introduced the Glo Infinitiser, which addresses lower tariff across several telecommunication platforms.

Glo Infinitiser

Glo Infinitiser, as announced by Globacom, simplifies the current terrain and gives substantial benefits and more value to postpaid customers.

Giving details of the product and service, Globacom’s Head of Corporate Sales, Kamaldeen Shonibare, said: “It is a new, exciting, first of its kind post-paid product offering that provides for unlimited free on-net calling (Glo to Glo) and free monthly 1GB data subject to a fixed monthly service access fee, which include security deposit of N5, 000; monthly service access of N5, 000, and entry cost of N10, 000. Other package comes with a monthly service access of N5, 000, and entry cost of N5, 000.”

The target markets are the high value postpaid and prepaid customers and corporate customers of other networks.

The Glo Infinitiser offers on-net calls (Glo to Glo) at 0 kobo/sec and off-net calls at 25k/sec, while SMS is N4/message, he said.

The Glo Infinitiser package gives the opportunity of turning the over 26 million subscribers on Glo network to friends and family at 100 per cent discount, since calls could be made at 0k/sec, affordable off net rate, free 1GB data monthly, and there is no difference between day and night, since callers can make free Glo to Glo calls anytime of the day and week.

In the area of multiple options, subscribers do not have to migrate their lines from one package to the other before making calls, and the product is available at all Gloworld.

Revolutionising Postpaid Lines

One unique features of the Glo Infinitiser that has revolutionised postpaid lines by empowering its users with the opportunity to make all manner of calls, including roaming of lines at reduced tariffs, is the benefit to make free calls to the over 26 million subscribers on the Globacom’s network, and at the same time, enjoy free 1GB data monthly.

While speaking at the launch of Glo Infinitiser, Shonibare, described it as the biggest post-paid product offering ever in Nigeria.

According to him, “Infinitiser gives a golden opportunity to achieve more, enables you to talk endlessly with loved ones and business associates. It helps you to close your deal and get fulfillment. It eliminates the difference between day and night because you can make free calls on it 24/7.”

Shonibare said subscribers would enjoy the loads of benefits once they pay the monthly subscription fee of N5, 000, adding that the new product offers subscribers more reasons to join Glo and enjoy the unlimited benefits offered by the network.

He said the product was introduced in line with Globacom’s commitment to delivering value and matchless tariffs to its subscribers.

“This product is outstanding. It is a super Closed User Group (CUG) which will appeal to business customers, high networth individuals, business owners and senior managers within the corporate, small and medium enterprises (SME) and the public sector,” he added.

He disclosed that subscribers, who are currently on the postpaid platform are eligible to migrate to the new Infinitiser while individuals who currently spend more than N5, 000 to recharge their pre-paid lines monthly also stand to benefit by subscribing to the new postpaid product. He said subscribers on other networks should also port to Glo network to enjoy the special package and still maintain their numbers.

Having introduced per second billing at a time when subscribers had lost hope of benefiting from its gains, Globacom has continued to offer products and services that are pocket-friendly, and the recent product, the Glo Infinitiser, is a testimony to the operator’s passion for tariff reduction in telecommunication services.
