AirAsia spreads its wings further into Indonesia - eTravelBlackboard

AirAsia, the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline awarded by Skytrax for the fifth year running, today announced direct flights to two additional destinations within Indonesia, Medan and Surabaya. This announcement comes shortly after its previous direct flight launch to Makassar, another city within the archipelago. With the new routes, AirAsia now flies direct from Singapore to 17 other destinations.

The expansion into Indonesia is a result of the demand the airline has been witnessing so far, among both leisure and business travellers.

“This is a significant milestone for us because not only are we increasing our flight options to our guests, our plan to grow Singapore as a virtual hub is bearing fruits. From June 2012 till now, AirAsia in Singapore has grown from servicing 12 direct routes to the current 17 – another clear sign of our commitment to Changi Airport and Tourism. AirAsia Group’s guest movement into Changi Airport increased by 5% year-on-year from 2011 to 2012 and we are expecting another good year with the addition of the three direct flights connecting Changi Airport to Indonesia. With our hub strategy, I’m looking forward to add and connect more new destinations to Changi Airport by offering more low fares to create new markets and to meet the travel demands of our existing guests,” says Logan Velaitham, CEO of AirAsia in Singapore.

“AirAsia Indonesia contributes about 20% of total Indonesia sectors to Changi Airport and we are thrilled with our contribution by being only a virtual hub. The opportunity to grow this market is huge given the fact that up to 43%# of the 3 million tourists arrival from South East Asia so far by air, are from Indonesia,” continues Logan.

“For us, Singapore presents a lot of opportunities as it is one of the most popular destinations for Indonesians. Many of them fly to Singapore for business, or even for weekend getaways with friends and family. That being said, we see ourselves adding more routes and frequencies in the years to come, which will lead to an increase in capacity as well as passengers traffic between the two countries. With the passenger traffic we bring inbound and outbound, we hope to play a significant role in strengthening the bilateral ties between Indonesia and Singapore.” says Dharmadi, CEO of Indonesia AirAsia.

In conjunction with the announcement, AirAsia is offering promotional fares from as low as SGD 60* to Medan, direct from Singapore – one way and SGD 65* to Surabaya, also direct from Singapore. Both discounted fares are available for booking from now till 23 June 2013, for travel between 15 August 2013 to 30 September 2013.
