MALAYSIANS recently had a taste of what is coming up at the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) 2014 through a special showcase called #ArtThursday.
Organised by Your Singapore in collaboration with the Singapore Tourism Board, the preview took place at the Damansara Performing Arts Centre.
The event featured award-winning indie band The Sam Willows, The Pipa Quartet led by the award-winning pipa player Dr Samuel Wong, The O.P.E.N director Noorlinah Mohamad as well as Showbiz Asia head of business Katie Marsden, who talked about stage show Cavalia which will make its Asian premiere in Singapore.
Apart from that, the performers from The Sin-Pen Colony theatre company were also on hand to preview their 2 Houses stage production.
#ArtThursday was hosted by Singaporean actress Tan Kheng Hua (better known as Margaret Phua from the sitcom Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd).
“Singapore’s recent artistic and cultural renaissance presents a diverse range of experiences that feeds our deep-rooted yearning for inspiration,” said South-East Asia 1 Singapore Tourism Board executive editor Edward Koh.
“It is our hope that the cultural expression seen through the lens of performances, arts, literature and other varieties of artistic work can be transformative, not just to the artistic industry in Singapore, but also a transformative experience for our visitors,” Koh said.
For Tan, #ArtThursday gave her the opportunity to get connected with Malaysian audiences.
“I just saw it as a perfect opportunity to share what I am fond of. It’s like when you are visiting your friend’s house and you will bring something that you love or like to share with them,” she said.
She also said that she was glad the Singapore Tourism Board gave her the opportunity to be a part of #ArtThursday and hoped that everybody would enjoy themselves during SIFA 2014.
Among the special guests at the showcase was well-known Malaysian-born director Bernard Chauly.
SIFA 2014, which will be held from Aug 12 to Sept 21, is in its 37th year.
The annual celebration of the performing arts will be presenting works in performance, theatre, dance and music.
