US embassy here suspends non-essential services

[SINGAPORE] The effect of the US government being in shutdown has trickled down to Singapore, with the US embassy here holding back on non-essential services.

An official of the embassy told The Business Times that as of yesterday, it was only offering consular services here.

Visa applications are still being processed, but staff manning other services classed as non-essential stayed home; the embassy’s senior management were at work, but were told to suspend non-essential engagement, including with the media, said the official, who declined to be named.

The impact of the government shutdown on commerce, investments and travel, however, will depend on the duration of the shutdown.
