Singapore New York — The Cruise Shipping Asia-Pacific 2013 opened yesterday at the Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, with a great lineup of conferences and discussions, following which, a welcome dinner where the inaugural Rama Rebbapragada Award was presented by president and chief executive officer of Celebrity Cruises, Michael Bayley.
Joined on stage by Rebbapragada’s wife Patricia, Bayley presented the award to Ong Huey Hong, director, Cruise with the Singapore Tourism Board, in recognition of her influential role in the development of Singapore’s Marina Bay Cruise Centre, which has proven to be a catalyst in transforming Singapore’s cruise landscape.
Among her multiple achievements, Ong actively pushed for the creation of the Cruise Development Fund to accelerate deployment in the region, not only helping to grow Singapore’s cruise industry, but creating economic benefits for neighboring countries with the increasing numbers of ships calling in Southeast Asia.
In addition, Ong identified the need to grow the distribution channels, working closely with the Asia Cruise Association to expand the pool of cruise specialists in key source markets including India, Indonesia and the Philippines.
