Sundramoorthy set to join Negri Sembilan

PETALING JAYA: V. Sundramoorthy has quit as coach of the Lions XII and Singapore Under-23 side for a new challenge.

The former Singapore international striker took charge of the Lions XII last year. He led them to the Super League crown this season.

The 48-year-old has turned down an offer from the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) to renew his contract. His contract expires in December.

Sundramoorthy is believed to be linked with a big-money move to Negri Sembilan next season. He, however, refused to confirm it.

“It was not an easy decision to make, especially since the FAS had earlier offered me a very competitive and fair package aimed at renewing my contract,” said Sundramoorthy in a press release yesterday.

“However, I believe it is time for me to embark on a new challenge, especially going overseas for my first coaching assignment.

“It has been a satisfying and fulfilling period for me and the various teams I have worked with since joining the FAS in 2004. We have established a strong foundation which will be key to the continued growth and success of Singapore football.”

With Sundramoorthy out, the FAS said they would place an advertisement to seek potential candidates for the post of Lions XII head coach for the 2014 M-League season.

For the Myanmar SEA Games in December, Young Lions’ coach Aide Iskandar will lead the Singapore Under-23 team.

Sundramoorthy believes the Singapore Under-23 side are capable of achieving good results in the Games.

“I regret that I am not able to lead the National Under-23 team to the Games. There is a possibility of me returning some day as Singapore football will always hold a very special place in my heart,” added Sundramoorthy.
