Leading overseas relocation specialist, Interdean, says Singapore is one of the best places in the world for students seeking to acquire technical skills following the recent WorldSkills Singapore competition.

The three-day event saw about 140 young people compete against each other demonstrating aptitude in a number of technical fields.

A total of 17 categories were on show including aircraft maintenance, restaurant service and mobile robotics.

The students participating were all hoping their prowess would earn them the chance to represent Singapore at the world finals in Brazil next year, an event that has been dubbed ‘the Olympics of Skills’.

Their abilities are testament to the work of the Institute of Technical Education, polytechnics, Shatec Institutes and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

At the competition’s opening ceremony at ITE College Central, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean insisted the efforts of the city-state’s technical education institutes have been a hugely important factor in Singapore’s low youth unemployment rate of 6.7 per cent.

The education they provide has also contributed to an increase in starting salaries for technical graduates in recent years.

As a leading international shipping and removal services provider, Interdean has backed the event and argues that it is further evidence of Singapore’s status as an elite destination for students of technical disciplines.

A spokesman for the company said: “The WorldSkills competition was a resounding success and the attributes demonstrated by the city-state’s young people were mightily impressive. We have no doubt that those students who are selected for the world finals in Brazil next year will do incredibly well.

“It was also a wonderful endorsement for the education sector in Singapore. Young people there benefit from some of the best tuition in the world and it continues to be seen as a benchmark for other countries around the world to aspire to,” he added.
