SINGAPORE: Three people – including one Singaporean – died when a Singapore-registered barge sank 2 nautical miles off Batam, on Friday night (July 18), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said on Sunday.
The MPA said that the barge, Posh Mogami, sank north-east of Sekupang, Batam, with nine people on board. The Indonesian authorities rescued six people – two Singaporeans, one Malaysian, one Dutch, one Filipino and an Indonesian.
Of the three bodies recovered, one was Singaporean, one Chinese, and one was Myanmarese, according to the MPA. The Jakarta Post reported that the three crew members were died were Chew Zhi Wei Terence, 31, from Singapore; Ye Myint Myat, 33, from Myanmar; and Zhejiang, 28, from China.
The Post also reported that the barge was built in China in 2012, and owned by a Singapore company.
The semi-submersible barge was carrying out submerging trials at the time of the incident, it added. The MPA is investigating the cause of the incident with the relevant authorities.
