ASEAN leaders yesterday gave the green light to set up a high-level task force to beef up the regional grouping’s secretariat so that it stays a central player in an evolving region.
As the 2015 deadline for the Asean Community looms, leaders of the 10-member-country Asean are in a hurry to form the task force to start work on strengthening the secretariat and reviewing the grouping’s processes and institutions.
At the same time, the leaders at their annual two-day Summit meeting went ahead to ask the Asean Coordinating Council to map out Asean’s vision beyond 2015. This is to be ready by the time of the 27th Asean Summit in 2015.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong told Singapore reporters that the council would have to set new goals for a more integrated Asean and consider how it could take the next step forward.
