Investigator takes shape

A NEW $120 million ship for the CSIRO is taking shape at a Singapore shipyard.

The 94 metre RV Investigator to replace the Southern Surveyor was commissioned a year ago.

Time-lapse footage of the construction has been released to coincide with world Oceans Day tomorrow.

The vessel will support oceanographic and atmospheric research, including climate and fisheries research.

CSIRO’s Future Research Vessel Project executive director Toni Moate said the vessel could house up to 40 scientists and stay at sea for 60 days at a time.

Among its state-of-the-art features are:

• a sonar and radar system that can map the seafloor to a depth of 7000 metres.

• a deep-water coring capability which can take cores 24 metres long at a depth of 7000 metres.

• A 2 tonne radar that can gather data from storms and clouds 20km above.

“The Investigator will be all things to all Australian marine scientists as Australia has only one blue water research vessel and this diverse and complex approach to marine and atmospheric science is unique to ocean research globally,” Ms Moate said.
