Malaysia, Singapore PMs unveil Marina One design

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong unveiled today the design of Marina One, a maiden joint-venture property project between Singapore and Malaysia.

The multibillion ringgit integrated development sited in Singapore’s upmarket Marina South district is designed by Christoph Ingenhoven, the world-renowned and award-winning architect known for his iconic green building designs like Google’s headquarters in California, the European Investment Bank in Luxemberg and 1 Bligh in Sydney, which won the International Highrise Award 2012/2013.

The project, which is scheduled for completion by 2017, is undertaken by M+S Pte Ltd, a company owned 60:40 by Malaysia and Singapore’s respective investment arms Khazanah Nasional Bhd and Temasek Holdings (Private) Ltd.

“I think we have a wonderful design,” Najib said, according to a transcript of this afternoon’s brief press conference at the launch in Singapore.

“I think we have a real winner and it’s Marina One. It certainly fulfills our expectation that we wanted a landmark iconic building – and what we see today is the beginning of that iconic building.”

Lee said the project would help Malaysia and Singapore foster closer ties in the coming years, and that it would add value to the city-state’s already robust development in Marina South.

“This is a very important project for both Singapore and Malaysia, and it’s going to be an iconic project in the middle of our new business district for many many more years to come,” he said.

Earlier today, the two national leaders announced Malaysia and Singapore’s agreement to build a high-speed rail link between both nations, helping to cut travel time down to just 90 minutes.

In his speech text from the unveiling ceremony of Marina One this afternoon, M+S chairman Tan Sri Azman Yahya said the partnership between Malaysia and Singapore would position Marina One on an “unprecedented scale” on the world map as a new financial centre to attract businesses.

“With its close proximity to the city centre, seamless connectivity to the public transport network through the Marina Coastal Expressway and access to Singapore’s largest and most connected MRT interchange by 2016, Marina One will be an exclusive address for living and working in the city,” he said.

Marina One covers a gross floor area of 3.67 million square feet and will include four towers for office spaces and residences, a retail podium and a green garden. Its neighbours include the famed Marina Bay Sands hotel, Singapore Flyer, Esplanade Theaters on the Bay and Gardens in the Bay.

By 2016, the project is also expected to be connected to Singapore’s largest and most connected Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) interchange, providing ease of access connecting the North South Line, Circle Line and Downtown Line.

Marina One Residences, to be launched in the second half of this year, includes two towers of 1,042 luxury city residences ranging from one to four-bedroom units.

Marina One Offices, which includes the East and West towers, features 1.88 million square feet of Grade A lettable office spaces.

“The Heart” retail podium covers 140,000 square feet net of lettable retail space for shopping and lifestyle facilities.
