THE southern Gold Coast is left looking like a war zone after ferocious winds of up to 90km/h hammered the region yesterday.
Scores of roofs were lifted by the winds, trees were toppled, power lines downed and debris strewn across the road.
The block surrounding Coolangatta Sands Hotel was evacuated yesterday morning when iron awnings broke loose.
Glass panes around the pool area of The Beachhouse hotel flexed and nearly went flying, shade cloth was torn to shreds by the winds and power lines bowed.
But perhaps the most spectacular damage was at a beachfront Tugun unit block that had its roof ripped off by about 11pm on Sunday.
Neighbour George Fanias said the roof had flown off the units, hit a power pole and bent it 45 degrees, bounced back on to his roof and come to rest on Golden Four Drive.
The entire roof, including its insulation, timber beams and iron sheets, was left scattered across the road for most of yesterday because emergency services could not risk moving it until the wind eased.
“We heard this terrible bang,” said Mr Fanias.
“It scared everybody, it was like an atom bomb going off.
“Nobody was hurt, thank God, but scavengers have been coming all night taking the timber.”
