Canberra Airport will partner with Toga Far East Hotels, under the Vibe Hotel brand, in a new 191-room hotel.

The seven-storey hotel will be built near the new terminal’s entrance.

Airport managing director Stephen Byron said Vibe Hotels was chosen as the winning brand with TFE Hotels’ understanding of the airport’s vision for the future.

“TFE Hotels is a leading hotel operator in Australia and operates the highly-respected Adina Apartment Hotels, Medina Serviced Apartments, Rendezvous Hotels, Vibe Hotels, Travelodge Hotels and Hotel Kurrajong Canberra,” Mr Byron said.

TFE Hotels is a joint venture between Australian family-owned company Toga Group and Far East Hospitality, Singapore’s largest private property developer.

“Canberra Airport is excited to be embarking on this venture with TFE Hotels, particularly as it strengthens the regional relationship with Singapore, one of Australia’s most important economic, intellectual and trading partners.”

The airport says the project is worth $50 million.

Toga Group managing director Allan Vidor says the airport partnership will provide business and leisure travellers with convenient 4.5 star accommodation at the airport and just a stone’s throw from the CBD.

“The announcement of this iconic new Vibe hotel is testimony to Canberra Airport’s commitment to maintaining its position as Australia’s leading airport and its strong vision for the Canberra region.”

Mr Byron also unveiled the winning design for the hotel by architectural firm Bates Smart, engaged for the building and interior design after a design competition conducted last year.

Situated just 150 metres from the entry to the new terminal, the building will be centred on a full height atrium featuring a large ground floor intermingle zone with reception, bar, restaurant and conferencing facilities.

The hotel will have a business travel focus and will provide sweeping views over Lake Burley Griffin to Parliament House, and across the runway to the east.

Lovely. Maybe we could shift the city centre to the Airport, and abandon the current site to the zombies from the Legislative Assembly?

- There is no city centre anyway. Just the Canberra Centre. And it keeps growing. So the CBD of our capital city can be split between a massive shopping mall and the Airport.

ACT Government needs to learn a thing or two from Canberra Airport. If the Airport says something they do it quickly. We wait years for ACT Government to act upon their promises.

- The clients of the “Vibe” hotel won’t be getting much good sleep at anytime of the day or night with multiple nearby jet engines roaring while taxing spinning up to full power to take off using their reverse thrust just after touching down all day night, particularly from those noisy, older engine technology passenger freight aircraft.
  The only vibe they will getting is the vibration of the building shaking from aircraft noise, like most of the residents in Canberra surrounds will have to suffer 24/7 in ever increasing amounts if Canberra airport remains curfew free.

Awesome! What a spectacular place to stay! Miles from anywhere with no decent public transport to get to and from the CBD, and they can all eat at the overpriced cafes of Brindabella Park, while being kept awake all night by planes flying in and our constantly due to the curfew free airport! Book me in!

If it is “only a stone’s throw from the CBD” then why wouldn’t you just stay in the CBD rather than the desolation of Canberra Airport?

I think it is a great idea, there is a airport hotel at every other capital city airport, why not Canberra. Will be fantastic prior to a early morning flight for travellers

I do a lot of international travel (both work and private) and the only reason I ever stay at an airport hotel is to make an early morning departure following a single overnight stay ie. avoid having to get up really early and get a cab. Good luck to these guy, I can’t see the hotel as a destination for people who come to Canberra and need to be elswhere in the city.
