SINGAPORE: A Singaporean was found dead early Tuesday morning in a hotel room in Brisbane, Australia.

Australian news reports have identified her as 27-year-old Meenatchi Narayanan, who was studying at a university in Brisbane.

Reports said Ms Meenatchi was found stabbed to death in a room at Travelodge hotel in the suburb of Upper Mount Gravatt.

Screams were heard coming from the hotel room.

Police forced their way in at about 12.30am on Tuesday, after a hotel staff member dialled the emergency number.

Australian media also reported that a South African of Indian origin was found injured in the room.

The 31-year-old suffered wounds that were believed to be self-inflicted.

He was taken to hospital and is believed to be under police guard.

Singapore’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said it is aware of the case and its High Commission in Canberra will provide consular assistance to the next of kin.

Hameed Rahman, Ms Meenatchi’s friend, said: “She told me she is pretty busy with her studies and stuff, so I told her I would get back to her later.

“When I checked Facebook, a lot of her friends were posting messages, saying ‘Where are you?’, ‘What happened to you?’.

“Meena’s brother posted on Facebook (later). He confirmed that it was a tragic event due to some circumstances which he did not elaborate. I think he is already in Brisbane now. As for their parents, I think they are still in Singapore.”

30-year-old Hameed Rahman described Ms Meenatchi as the “best of all my best friends”.
