Marina Bay Sands’ ISO 20121 certification will boost the integrated resort’s competitive edge and help its environmentally conscious clients enhance their reputation in sustainable event management as well as meet their sustainability goals. The integrated resort already has a strong global sustainability strategy in place. Sands ECO360° is designed to help minimize environmental impact through the implementation of sustainable practices in building management and resort operations. Sands ECO360° is spearheaded by the integrated resort’s parent company, Las Vegas Sands, and drives the stewardship of Marina Bay Sands’ responsible operations in the areas of green building, environmentally responsible operations, green meetings and sustainability education and outreach.

ISO 20121, an international standard launched at the 2012 London Olympics, is designed to help improve sustainability throughout the entire event management cycle. Environmentally conscious meeting planners and organisations looking to improve the sustainability of their event-related activities, products and services, will be pleased to deliver their events with service providers that are compliant with the ISO 20121 standard.

“Achieving the ISO 20121 Sustainable Events Management System certification and being the first venue in Singapore to do so is a significant milestone for Marina Bay Sands. Our organization is committed to integrating our business operations with sustainable practices, and this certification helps strengthen our position in both the meeting industry as well as the community we operate in. We hope that our efforts in environmental protection will inspire our clients, partners and stakeholders to adopt responsible environmental and social practices as well as drive the industry in that direction in the future,” said Mr George Tanasijevich, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marina Bay Sands.

“We applaud Marina Bay Sands’ sustainability efforts and strongly encourage more MICE partners to integrate sustainability practices into their operations,” said Mr Chew Tiong Heng, STB’s Executive Director for Business Tourism Development. “As part of the efforts to make Singapore a liveable and lively city state, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) continues to work closely with industry stakeholders to promote sustainable development and roll out sustainable events. This enables our stakeholders in the MICE industry to be responsible global citizens while being future-ready.”

The ISO 20121 certification is awarded by BSI, an independent certification body for management systems. To achieve this certification, Marina Bay Sands considered internal and external stakeholders’ opinions in enhancing its sustainability programme. It also integrated the event management system into its daily operations, taking into consideration social, environmental and economic aspects. A strong monitoring and reporting system is also put in place and will be continually reviewed and improved upon to maintain programme integrity.

“Marina Bay Sands has consistently demonstrated its commitment to executing good sustainable business practices at its Sands Expo Convention Centre’s operations. The achievement of ISO 20121 Sustainable Events Management System certification proves that sustainability is well embedded in its strategic business approach. The integrated resort also ensures that the significant aspects of running internal and external events are sustainable in Marina Bay Sands,” said Mr. Wilfred Chan, Sustainability Product Manager, BSI Asia Pacific and Operation Director BSI Hong Kong.

In addition to being the first venue in Singapore to be ISO 20121 certified, Marina Bay Sands is also the single largest building in Singapore to be conferred the Green Mark Gold Award by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) in 2012 and the first venue outside of the U.S.A. to receive the Apex/ASTM Level 1 certification for sustainable meetings in 2013.
