AN estimated 1.4 million tourists visited the Tweed Shire this year thanks to what Destination Tweed describes as an “integrated and strategic approach to tourism marketing”.






Board chair Anne Duke has presented findings on visitor numbers, showing a huge increase in visitors despite challenges presented by a high Australian dollar.






“When the Australian dollar climbs, short overseas holidays instantly become more attractive to the domestic market and also affects the nation’s appeal as a destination to the inbound market,” Ms Duke said.






“The data analysis however shows a 21.9% increase in the number of domestic overnight visitors over the previous 12 month period, with a corresponding increase of 48.6% in visitor nights.






“A similar growth has occurred in the international market with visitor estimates the highest they have been for quite some time and international nights seeing significant growth.”






Ms Duke added Tweed’s Visitor Information Centres were attracting more than 1000 people a week .






Destination Tweed chief executive Bill Tatchell pointed out noticeable increases in tourists from South Africa, Singapore and Malaysia and said China was a future target.






He said Destination Tweed would work hard in 2014 to fine-tune its appeal to international markets.
