S"pore F1 attracts 400 million viewers worldwide

SINGAPORE – It weaves through downtown Singapore and along Marina Bay under the night sky every September.

The moment the race roared off for the first time in 2008, Formula One’s SingTel Singapore Grand Prix (left) took the breath away, and was immediately billed a worldclass event.

Over the past five years, the Singapore Grand Prix has reached 400 million TV viewers around the world.

The event, consistently rated as one of the hottest races on the annual Formula 1 calendar, costs approximately $150 million to organise, but generated approximately $140-$150 million in incremental tourism receipts each year.

With the Singapore Sports Hub at Kallang set to open its doors in April 2014, Second Minister for Home Affairs Trade and Industry S Iswaran, says the country is gradually achieving its tourism and positional objective on the world map.

Speaking at an exclusive behind-thescenes tour of the Marina Bay street circuit on Monday – part of the Rev Up Singapore! Initiative – Mr Iswaran said: “The Singapore Grand Prix is an opportunity for Singapore to host international standard and world class events.

“In the first five years, the race has reached 400 millions viewers – that is a major outreach.

“It reaches markets we previously had not, such as Latin America, Germany and France. That’s also not including the number of tourists the race generates.”
