New multi-service centre for needy by 2015

SINGAPORE — By 2015, the poor and the vulnerable in Singapore will get more support through a multi-service centre in Toa Payoh.

Agape Village, a four-storey centre which houses charities and services provided by the social arm of the Catholic Church, will offer services such as counselling, legal aid, caregiver support, job training and job-matching for displaced workers.

The centre will also have facilities such as counselling and training rooms, a multipurpose hall, thrift shop, food bank and cafe.

Minister for Social and Family Development Chan Chun Sing, who was guest of honour at a ground-breaking and blessing ceremony yesterday, said that Agape Village is one example of how social services can be better integrated.

The centre can also work with other voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs) in Toa Payoh to reach out to the needy, he added.

Mr Chan said: “Many other VWOs are much smaller in capacity, and they may not be able to provide the range of services that is required to help the people in need.

“And this is where we will need to do another dimension of integration. The integration of different VWOs coming together, regardless of faith, regardless of background, to provide an integrated package of help to the people in need.”

The Church aims to raise S$15 million for the project. To date, S$3.4 million has been raised.
